Once upon a time, there were two musicians. They each released a single and each received 100 streams.One made $0.30 from 100 streams.The other made $20.30, also from 100 streams.Why the difference?

The answer is music publishing. The second musician had set up their publishing first and so received royalties the first musican didn't.

So how do musicians set up publishing?They register themselves and their works with performing rights organizations and collective management organizations, who then collect royalties for musicians.

Who are the U.S. organizations?

  1. ASCAP

  2. BMI

  3. MLC

  4. HFA

  5. MRI

  6. SoundExchange

  7. Dramatists Guild (for opera and musical theatre)

Each one of these organizations is in charge of a different type of royalty. To receive those royalties, a musician has to be registered and have their works listed at each one. If you are not registered with at least four of the primary six, you are not receiving all your royalties.

03. Next steps

  1. If you are on the Basic or Early Career plans, we will use the email address provided to send you a co-publishing agreement.

  2. After you sign and return it to us, we will use the information provided to enter you into the music publishing system.

  3. We will email you with guidance for setting up personal accounts with each agency so that you may receive your royalty payments via direct deposit. You will receive an option to have a guided walk-through video call, as well.
